GoDaddy Outage – New Host Needed

In light of the recent GoDaddy outage, and the fact that they may be the target of hackers, I’ve decided to move my web hosting and domains. I’m currently on GoDaddy’s Ultimate hosting, it has unlimited domains, space and bandwidth for $14.99/mo. It’s not like that’s what I needed, it was just cheap, and who can beat unlimited everything! Maybe that’s why there servers were overloaded? They did give me a free month of hosting due to the down time, which works out! I can open a new account and maintain my old one without having to pay for two accounts at the same time!

I host a small number of personal sites that don’t get very much traffic at all. I was using about 6GB of space and less than 200MB of bandwidth per month. I wanted something that wasn’t too expensive, but allowed me to host multiple site. I ened up choosing pair Networks, so far I’m very impressed! I chose their Advanced plan, which is $20/mo, with the coupon code: THG, I was able to get rid of the $25 setup fee! It has unlimited domains/sub-domains, 20GB of space and 100GB/mo bandwidth. More than I need. Their interface has been simple and easy to use.

Keeping Things Separate

I’ve always disliked the fact that at GoDaddy I had to have a primary domain, and then all other domains had to be inside of that primary domain.

/my/path/html/example1.com
/my/path/html/example1.com/example2.com
/my/path/html/example1.com/example3.com

At pair Networks each site is completely separate!

/my/path/public_html/example1.com
/my/path/public_html/example2.com
/my/path/public_html/example3.com

Dedicated IP Address Included

At pair Networks your first domain comes with a dedicated ip. If you choose, each site you add can also have it’s own dedicated IP for just $1.95/mo. When adding a new domain to your hosting account you simple check Dedicated IP or Shared IP. If you choose to share it uses the dedicated IP that you get as part of the hosting account. If you’ve paid for additional dedicated IPs you can choose which IP you want to use for your a Shared IP domains. Each domain is individually controlled, you can have half of your domains use one IP, and the other half use another IP.

Moving my Domains

I moved all of my domains to directNIC, the cost to transfer a .com domain is only $8.09! I’m all about saving money and this seemed to be one of the best prices I could find. I was with directNIC in the past, but I switch away to save some money with GoDaddy, now I find myself switching back! The transfer processing can be a confusing mess. I suggest checking out the GoDaddy Support article on the subject before you start.
